What About a Water Car?
By Mark L. Casey | July 11, 2008
I recently heard a caller to the Clark Howard show claim that he purchased an add-on hydrogen fuel cell for his vehicle for $2,000 that would allow him to double his gas mileage. I have no way of verifying this claim, but his call prompted me to do a little reading. I am still very skeptical about many of the claims that are out there, but it is fascinating nonetheless.
As escalating oil costs drive gasoline and diesel costs, we are all feeling the pain at the pump. These increased fuel prices are impacting transportation costs for businesses as well as for individuals and families, and we are now starting to see fuel surcharges added to goods and services. This increased cost will continue making its way into everything we buy, driving inflation ever higher. In business our supply chains are getting more expensive.
With this reality a lot of alternative fuel technologies are receiving priority in the lab. We recently wrote about the promise of vehicles powered by compressed air. Another technology is the hydrogen fuel cell. The more I read about this technology, the more it seems like a viable alternative that could help break our dependence on foreign oil. As mentioned in the video below, the US military seems to see it as a promising alternative. Check out this video:
This article provides a more complete description about how hydrogen fuel cells work, and a warning about consumers not falling for scams.
I would be very interested in hearing from any readers that have personal experience with an add-on hydrogen fuel cell.
