I Want An Air Car
By Mark L. Casey | June 9, 2008
There is something about putting $100 worth of gas into the tank of my SUV that really motivates me. My friend, JQ, just returned from France where at this writing they pay about $8.80 per gallon, so I know we have it relatively “good” at just shy of $4 per gallon for regular unleaded. Still, there is nothing good about it.
The idea of depending on oil producing countries that hate us is not very appealing. I have been captivated by the notion of being able to tool around town in a car that runs on air. What will Iran do about that? How will the Saudis charge me for that? OPEC? How about making America an APIC? An Air Powered Independent Country?
Is an air car a real thing or fantasy? Judge for yourself: Air Car.
The fact is that the air car is now commercially available in some countries. It is just a matter of time before it comes to the US and other western countries. Hybrids are a great thing, but air? Are you kidding me? I want an air car. Come to America, Tata. Better yet, are you listening Ford, GM, and Chrysler? Produce an air car and watch me dump my SUV faster than you can say “give me 4000 PSI on pump three.”
Oh sure, there will be safety concerns and technical challenges. I also realize that it takes fossil fuels (or some other fuel source like nuclear) to compress air, but I predict that this technology is viable and that we will see air cars in North America within ten years.
Let me tie this in with the domain of sourcing. Given that our supply chains are greatly affected by the cost of fuel and transportation, we are going to continue to write about energy topics in Artful Sourcing. I am much more enamored of algae as an alternative fuel than I am of corn for ethanol, but we will be exploring both of these fuels and many others in the months ahead. Our ability to control our transportation and energy costs is as important as breaking our dependence on foreign oil.
But, mainly I just want an air car.
